Only then does the collapse produce an outward T in the form of the employee saying, “You can’t film in here,” along with the emotional residue and any recorded material. The key insight is that collapse may remain internal, but in this case it produced an external trace that can be modeled.

B4. Note on Internal Meaning and External Traces

While the UPC sequence unfolds internally, only the trace is guaranteed to appear in the external world through language, gesture, behavior, or other expressions. A modeler observing another person has access only to these traces, not to the internal LO articulations or the internal collapse that produced them. However, individuals can model themselves because they have direct access to their own potentials, articulations, recognitions, and collapses as they occur.

When modeling externally collapsed traces, the modeler inevitably draws on their own available tools: their experience, education, pattern recognition, prior observations, the models they already carry. These resources shape how they interpret traces and decide which potentials, salience shifts, or articulations to include. This does not grant access to another person’s internal operators; it simply reflects that all modeling is perspectival and uses the modeler’s own meaning‑formation chain.

The UPC Trace Mapper can therefore be used in two modes: externally, where the modeler works from traces; and internally, where a person reflects on their own sequence. In guided sessions, the tool can also be used collaboratively: with the person’s consent, the modeler may ask them each step directly and record their responses in the table. This allows the internal operators to be surfaced voluntarily, making the modeling process transparent, participatory, and ethically grounded.
